During Lavoisier's time, Pont Neuf was the only bridge to use in the vicinity. Just to the east of the Mazarin College was the Hotel de la Monnaie, where the first École de Mines was located. Humboldt's home was just to the west of Mazarin College. Champollion, the translator of the Rosetta Stone in 1822, had his home south of Mazarin College on Rue Mazarine by 150 meters.
